History of the Isle of Dogs

The Isle of Dogs has dramatically changed over the years. During the 1800s shipbuilding and maritime industries started developing in the Isle of Dogs. There were so many industries that they had to expand the docklands area, they had to build docks on the north side of the island as well. After that, they built the East India Docks, bringing businesses such as shipyards, ironworks and others. The Isle of Dogs population then increased significantly and lots of workers moved to the area for local businesses. This led to the need for more housing and developments. The population grew to over 14,000 by the mid 1800s, to over 20,000 by the start of the 20th century. After the Second World War the area went through a major redevelopment under the management of the London Docklands Development Corporation. The Corporation created the financial centre at Canary Wharf that now dominates the area. This also improved the local transport links. Parts of the Isle of Dogs still remain in their original state but most of the Isle of Dogs now contains high end housing and high finance skyscrapers.

After researching the Isle of Dogs, my group has decided to show the change in the Isle of Dogs in a positive way. We are showing the positive factors of the development e.g. offices and skyscrapers. From reading the research, we can tell that the change has improved the area dramatically and thats what makes the area so popular today.
